They were dealt a big blow on the eve of the final, though, when midfield fulcrum Ivan Jerkovic had to be hospitalized with what had initially seemed to be a case of food poisoning.

Things turned grim when it was later learnt the Croatian had an organ inflammation, forcing Vjeran Simunic into moving lead forward Shahrazen Said back into midfield as Oh Ddog Yi and Abu Bakar Mahari occupied the strikers’ spots.

Komar’s organizational skills proved to be an immense asset as he covered for Sallehuddin’s absence, while acting captain Rosmin Kamis was also strong in his screening role in front of their back three.

With both defences on top, clear opportunities on goal were hard to find, although that seemed to do little to dampen the spirits of the crowd, which numbered 5,320 strong.

The largest ever attendance for a club game at Jalan Besar Stadium certainly brought a good amount of noise with them, helping to create a decent atmosphere that made up for a match that had struggled to sustain its positive start.

The SAFFC fans made their feelings heard each time a man in red and black had gone to ground, challenge or no challenge, and the DPMM fans responded by booing every time a Warriors man touched the ball.

DPMM coach Vjeran Simunic agreed the match did not see both teams at their best.

The Croatian then spoke on the condition of his ill midfielder Ivan Jerkovic.

“The situation with Jerkovic is now dangerous, because even the doctors are not sure right now what’s wrong with him,” he said, looking worried.

"He felt a big pain in this part – what do you call it, pancreas? We thought it was food poisoning at first, but then he ate the same food as other people and they have no pain.

“Jerkovic must stay here in a hospital when we all fly back to Brunei, because nobody can take risks with his life. He was crying when he heard he cannot play, and I’m sorry for him because he made four brilliant performances before tonight to get the team here.”
