TWO long goals in the second half secured GenX a 2-0 victory over Tawakal Apa to be crowned champions of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Football Club Futsal tournament at the Multipurpose Hall of the UBD Sports Complex in Tungku Link last night.
After going into halftime scoreless, GenX picked up their pace in the match with tenacious defence and in the 11th minute Hj Hariz Hj Shahminan shot from three-quarters length of the court to beat the unsuspecting Tawakal Apa keeper to put his team ahead 1-0.
Tawakal Apa were relying on their counterattacks but it didn't bear fruit as GenX were quick back onto defence. The game was put beyond reach in the fifth minute when Mohd Zulsharin Hj Japarin tried from half court which once again beat the Tawakal Apa keeper as he was off his line to secure the victory.
"It was good effort by everyone to the maximum. We played with good teamwork putting up a tight defence that helped us win the game," said Syed Abdul Mu'iz Hj Syed Anayatullah Shah, Captain of GenX, after their victory.
GenX had only let in two goals throughout the two-week tournament which saw Syed Abdul Mu'iz bag the best goalkeeper award as well.
The topscorer award went to Mansyor Jalilah Hj Ishak of Forza A while the best player award went to Hj Hariz. "The whole event was a success as it went quite well and we would just like to thank our sponsors for making it possible," said Amzar Muaz Tamit, President of the UBD football club.
The third place match saw Forza A edge out Tajs Boys 3-2 on penalties after they drew 1-1 after full time.
The tournament held in conjunction with the 2009 Convocation Festival of UBD, saw 36 teams divided into six groups take part. Present as guest of honour to give out the prizes was Dr Hj Ramlee Hj Tinkong, Deputy Dean of UBD.
